Inspired to Make a Difference

Andrew Massimilla

Andrew Massimilla thought he was only arriving to Chamberlain, SD, to hunt for pheasants hidden along the rolling hills of the wide-open prairie. Although this happened, he came upon another hidden gem along the Missouri River's edge – St. Joseph's Indian School.

The name was familiar to him, as he and wife Barbara had received some mail from the school, but this was a chance to see it in-person and up-close. What began with one simple visit, has turned into a decade-long friendship of helping to educate and care for the Lakota (Sioux) children.

"We made an initial gift from the mailing we received, but that visit was what made all the difference when deciding if we would continue our giving," said Andrew.

At the time of the visit, plans were in the works for St. Joseph's Health and Family Services Center. This crucial project resonated with the Massimillas, who gave a gift. Their kindness continued thereafter, as our programs and services expanded.

Along with their giving, the Massimillas also help St. Joseph's Indian School by spreading the word about our school and programs.

"A good friend of mine received a mailing and inquired about St. Joseph's Indian School to us in conversation. My answer, 'St. Joseph's is a worthy cause and they are making a difference.'"

St. Joseph's Indian School is grateful for this support because, after all, we can only "make a difference" because of the kindness of others who open their hearts to help our mission and the Native American children who call our campus home.
